Self-development is about finding out who we are and understanding how we change.
Change can feel uncomfortable, uncontrolled, confusing, and frustrating. On the other hand, sometimes we feel completely frozen or circling in an endless loop. These are often a part of the developmental journey, and understanding more about these common disorientations can ease the stresses of growing into our potential. We learn from life’s challenges and opportunities.
As you discovered in our course The Three Questions, the development of perspectives involves three parameters that reveal repeating patterns over 12 levels. Changing one or more of these parameters creates a transformation of oneself. The sometimes turbulent processes that propel us from each level to the next are just as important as the levels themselves. Sometimes these transitions occur so gradually we hardly know they are happening, while other times they’re brought on by a sudden life event like a birth, marriage, divorce, or ill health.
Experiences of questioning, dissonance, loss, openness, insight, and penetrating self-reflection can all occur at each developmental transition, as we leave one worldview behind to open to a new perspective.
We call this course Developmental Gifts & Confusions because periods of disorientation and even turmoil are symptoms of a perspective transformation.
Understanding these dynamics can support self-acceptance and acceptance of those around us as we transform.
Transformations are deeply experiential, personal, and often unpredictable. We can’t force a transformation, but we can learn to recognize the shifts in our experience when they happen. We can befriend, normalize and recognize the signs of positive change, even when they don’t feel positive. We can infuse these times with more patience, wisdom, and lightheartedness.
